Flying Site

The Knavesmire is a racecourse (horseracing) which consists of flat pasture extending in an approximately diamond-shape from north to south. The schematic diagram shown below shows the view from the spectator area and competitor tents, looking west. The N/S axis (right/left on the schematic) is approximately 2km in length and the east/west (forwards on schematic) is 0.8Km. The race track itself forms the outer boundary of the area and the paddock, parade area, stands, and other facilities are located at the East apex. There are some woods to the South-West, and there are various buildings outside of the course extending from the West apex around the North apex and down to the race stands at the East apex. None of these features are in any way obstructive to the use of the central area for F5B/F5D competition flights. The prevailing wind direction is from the west. The site has excellent facilities with an inclusive camping and caravanning area, toilets and showers, a location for the banquet, power supplies, and good access to the city of York (only 2 Km from the campsite to the city centre) and to the surrounding road network. The available on site facilities will be added to in the form of tented accommodation for organisers and teams, limited refreshments, and administrative facilities. See an aerial photo of the site and a streetmap of the area.

Course Direction

The F5B course direction will have base B to the left and will face north-west. This will give the best safety and sun conditions. Note that this is a change from the original statement.
